The world celebrates International women’s on March 8. However, a lot of people are still not familiar with the celebration despite it being held globally for several decades now. If you are unfamiliar with the celebration, here are a few details on International Women’s Day.

  • The first National Women’s Day was held in February 28, 1909 by the Socialist Party of America. It campaigned for voting rights and better pay for women. After a year, in the International Women’s Conference in Copenhagen, representatives of the party suggested that an International Women’s Day should be celebrated. It was a day to promote women’s suffrage (voting) and equal rights.
  • In 1911, the day was honored by Denmark, Austria, Switzerland and Germany. More than a million people attended rallies to campaign for women’s right to hold public office, vote, work and be trained as well as to end discrimination.
  • In 1913, the date was moved to March 8 and International Women’s Days has been celebrated on the date ever since.
  • In 1975, the United Nations officially recognized International Women’s day and sponsored it.
  • Now, over 15 countries, including Vietnam, China and Ukraine, consider it as an official holiday.
  • In the United States, the occasion has been extended to the whole month of March under the title ‘Women’s History Month’.

This year, the theme of the celebration is #PressforProgress. The theme indicates a strong call to press forward for the progress of gender parity. It’s a call to action to unite and motivate colleagues, friends and the whole community to think and act to be gender inclusive
