Not-So-Usual Things to Do in Qatar

Lifestyle & Hobby News

Contrary to what some people may think, there are lots of thing to do in Qatar. And it does not just involve riding camels (although you can definitely do that). You can have fun. Relax and be fit in Qatar. And you can do it in not-so-usual ways.

Sailing and Dragon Boat. When you think of Qatar, one of the usual things that come to mind are sand dunes. While ocean waters may be the last thing you’ll think about the country, Qatar does have crystal clear beaches. After all, before oil was discovered, pearl diving and fishing were the main source of income of Qatar residents. Today, the oceans are source of hobby and fitness activities.

You can sail or participate in a dragon boat as a hobby or for training as competition. If you’re unfamiliar with dragon boat, this is basically racing by synchronized rowing. Sounds easy, but it’s a grueling experience.

Kayaking. Another activity you can do is kayaking. In Al Khor, particularly in the mangrove plantations of Al Thakira. Not only is it fun, you get to see different creatures in the water and mangroves.

Dhow cruise. Another seaside activity you can do is a Dhow cruise. A Dhow is a traditional Qatari boat, used for pearl diving. Now, such boats are used for sight-seeing. Some Dhows have entertainment, others have food.

Outdoor fitness. Qatar has been promoting itself as a sports hub. And it truly is transforming into a place where you can be active in sports. Besides gyms, you can go to its parks to jog, bike of even play football, basketball and tennis. Aspire Park should be your foremost destination. One of Qatar’s finest places, the park is a goldmine for activity. Play sports, rest, have a snack while enjoying nature in the most comfortable manner. Also, the park has an area where you, and your kids, can use exercise equipment. Be fit and have fun.

Aspire also has a large place where you can fly a kite. While flying kite may seem old school, it’s a nice activity which teaches you control.

Desert safari and camping. A stay in Qatar will not be complete if you do not visit its legendary sands. A lot of adventure sites provide dune bashing, which is also called desert safari, which is loved by both the locals and expats. Some site feature a whole package as well. You get a cultural show, a barbecue and get to sleep in a tent.

Rock climbing. Again, this may come as a surprise, but Qatar has lots of rock formations. And we are not talking about the artificial ones you find in malls and sporting areas. In the western part, particularly in Zekreet, rock formation can reach up to 15 meters. While boulders in the central part, in the Musfer Sinkhole, in Umm Al Shabrum also present a challenge. However, its best to go rock climbing during much colder weather since the heat as well as possible sandstorms may ruin the experience.

Finally, if you want a more laid back, cultural experience in Qatar, visit its parks. Museum of Islamic Art, or simply MIA Park, for example, is both an art hub, park and a place where you can enjoy some coffee and snacks while you chill. Al Bidda, a newly opened park is located in the heart of Doha and is easily accessible. A good place to melt the stress of work because of its proximity.
