Have you ever wondered what the traditional games of Qatar are?
Today, games are typically found in cellphones, tablets and PC. Sports like football and basketball can also be played. But during the old times, when these were not available, Qatar had traditional games to help everyone pass the time and keep them fit as well.
Fortunately, with the help of the British Council and Ministry of Municipality and Environment you can relive the times when traditional Qatari games were played. Just drop by Dahl Al Hammam Park.
The park, located just opposite Tawar Mall, will have a unique maze called “Street of Doha: City of Joy”. The maze will represent the old streets of Doha, and will feature the changing culture of how spaces were used in the country. The maze will be showcased in the park for the next two months.
The maze, a combination or architecture and art, was a creation of the winners of the British Council Qatar’s Unlimited Doha Design Prize.
According to Public Parks Department Director, Mohamed Al Khouri, “Doha is famous for its modern architecture, but we want to ensure people don’t forget about the history and culture of the people who help make Qatar what it’s today”.
Besides playing traditional games, park-goers can also play as they go through the narrow passages of the maze.
To educate people about Qatari architecture and how it influences today’s modern urban planning, the British Council will also hold a talk called ‘Streets of Doha: Between the Future and the Past.’
