Bringing the GPT-4 Dream to Life with MetaGPT

GPT

At the GPT-4 launch event, OpenAI’s researchers demonstrated the multimodal LLM’s ability to generate a website from a paper sketch. However, despite users’ aspirations to leverage this feature for creating websites from scratch with GPT-4, OpenAI has not yet made this capability publicly available.

MetaGPT from Pico Apps appears to be making progress towards fulfilling this vision, albeit through a distinct approach. This GPT-4-driven software has the ability to produce websites, applications, and other outputs based solely on natural language prompts. MetaGPT has been utilized to generate dashboards, code-based visualizations, and even a marriage proposal!

What is MetaGPT and How Does it Work?

MetaGPT from Pico Apps appears to be making progress towards fulfilling this vision, albeit through a distinct approach. This GPT-4-driven software has the ability to produce websites, applications, and other outputs based solely on natural language prompts. MetaGPT has been utilized to generate dashboards, code-based visualizations, and even a marriage proposal!

MetaGPT’s unique feature that sets it apart from other no-code website building platforms is its seamless integration with ChatGPT. After gathering the user’s initial prompt and inputs, MetaGPT allows for the incorporation of ChatGPT’s capabilities into the application. Any prompts enclosed within curly brackets will be directed to ChatGPT, which will generate the necessary text without requiring any code or API calls, relying solely on natural language prompts to meet the user’s needs.

In addition, MetaGPT offers users the ability to refine their prompts and visualize the website as GPT-4 codes it in real time. The platform presents the user with the option to iterate on the chatbot’s output, recommending multiple iterations to achieve a high-quality application. These iterations may include anything from modifying the user interface and user experience to resolving bugs or even redesigning the entire website.

We attempted to create a rudimentary website using MetaGPT, which generates an op-ed based on a given topic and desired word count. To initiate the process, we entered the basic prompt “build an app that can write an op-ed” into the platform. Following this prompt, the web application requested additional details, such as the user input and the syntax required to forward the task to ChatGPT.

This development in web applications represents a significant step forward, leveraging the capabilities promised by GPT-4, which OpenAI is currently working to deploy safely. Nevertheless, the demand for innovation within the AI community remains insatiable, and it appears that the industry is unwilling to wait for OpenAI to fully realize its potential.

Taking over OpenAI

Following the release of GPT-4, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT plugins, which many hailed as the “App Store” moment for LLMs. This move involved the release of 12 plugins that expanded the chatbot’s capabilities and a standard that enabled developers to create additional plugins.

Nonetheless, the initial excitement surrounding this functionality has dwindled, as plugins remain accessible to only a minority of ChatGPT’s users. Moreover, the feature is solely accessible to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, while other users must wait on a waiting list for potential access.

In the absence of widespread access to the GPT-4 API, the developer community has taken matters into their own hands and devised innovative ways to leverage its capabilities. A prime example is AutoGPT, an open-source initiative aiming to enable GPT-4 to operate autonomously. Other similar endeavors include BabyAGI, a task management system powered by the GPT API, and AgentGPT, a platform for developing autonomous AI agents to automate repetitive tasks.

These community-driven, open-source initiatives have been a catalyst for creativity, inspiring many to explore new applications for GPT-4. As a result, the excitement surrounding the release of GPT-4 has not waned, but rather shifted towards these community projects, as evidenced by the enormous popularity of AutoGPT, MetaGPT, Baby AGI, and other such endeavors.

As OpenAI’s release of GPT-4 features such as multimodality and ChatGPT Plugins continues to be delayed, the developer community is stepping up to find new and innovative ways to leverage this powerful LLM. While some projects, such as Forefront.ai and AnonChatGPT, are essentially wrappers around OpenAI’s APIs with additional functionality, others like MemeCam and Bing Chat are creating entirely new use cases with the GPT-4 API. OpenAI must move quickly to avoid being overtaken by those at the forefront of innovation.
